2/26/14  Bonnie's upset
"I couldn't be more disappointed, more upset or more frustrated," KU coach Bonnie Henrickson said of K-State's 76-68 victory over the Squawks. "We have always embraced our matchup and our rivalry with them since before the league changed, but we don't show up with any pop and let them smack us around. I still can't believe that's how we started the game." Read the post-mortem in the Lawrence Journal-World.

2/04/14  Lehning's story connects with recruits
Joshua Kinder in the Manhattan Mercury has a must-read profile on Shalee Lehning. It focuses on her recruiting of Kindred Wesemann and Leti Romero, and the success that has come from her telling her story as a former player. We couldn't have a finer representative of Kansas State Women's Basketball. I remember from her days as a player what an exceptional communicator and motivator Shalee was, and knew even then that she would be a great asset on our coaching staff.

1/29/14  Kansas State defeats Oklahoma, 86-78 (first win in 14 meetings)
Halfway through the second half, I turned to the person next to me and said, "We're playing them even. We need to win this." Oklahoma kept making runs at the Cats, but they kept their composure. Several successful trips to the free throw line were a part of the victory. Leti Romero made 9 of 12 free throws, Brianna Craig made 2 of 2, Ashia Woods made 2 of 2, Katya Leick made 3 of 4 and Kindred Weseman made 3 of 3.

The Cats' field goal percentage was 44.8%, to 49.1% for the Okies, but we hit 50.0% on threes (11 of 22), while OU hit 21.1% (4 of 19). Rebounding was almost equal. Turnovers were almost equal. Assists were almost equal. To me, the difference for the win was 11 threes for the Cats, vs. four for OU.

Coach P was extremely pleased with the Cats:

"Just really proud of our basketball team tonight. It was K-State fight, K-State intensity, and K-State teamwork. I felt like everyone was dialed in, and that was as good as a game I could ask this team to compete. I could not be any happier, just not about the victory but how we competed for 40 minutes. What we were talking about after the Kansas game was to improve and I think you can see how much improvement we have made in the past couple of days just with understanding the competitive intensity that we are capable of playing with. It was just a really wonderful effort and I am proud of everyone and how they competed today."

Here's the official recap.

5/08/13  Watch Laurie Koehn hit 132 three-pointers in five minutes
The scene was K-State's Basketball Training Facility on May 8. Watch the YouTube video of her amazing performance, with play-by-play by Danielle Zanotti. Laurie only missed on shots #40, #123 and #128 enroute to 132 made in 135 attempts, over exactly five minutes. I think we should also compliment the rebounder, who gave her perfect, efficient passes. Laurie set the NCAA record for career three-pointers (392) on March 21, 2005, in her last game as a college player. Here's my video of that milestone.
