11/21/12 K-State signs four freshmen during early period Deb Patterson announced today the signing of four players who are going to make a big impact.

7/20/12 Coggins is coming home! The Women's Basketball program has announced the return of #14 Claire Coggins, 2007 grad and veteran of the WNBA, to serve as video coordinator. Here's the announcement. While you're at it, have a look at Claire's half-court shot with 0.7 seconds remaining vs. Wyoming on Nov. 17, 2006, and Brian Smoller going nuts thereafter. I know Claire will make great contributions to the program! |
4/15/12 K-State wins Big 12 Pack the House competion K-State Athletics has been named the NCAA 'Pack the House' Big 12 Conference winner for the second straight season, following a sellout crowd Feb. 4 in Bramlage Coliseum. K-State is one of 33 winners in the NCAA Division I challenge in an announcement made by the NCAA. K-State's 'Pack the House' contest was when the Wildcats hosted undefeated, and eventual national champion, Baylor. The 12,528 fans in attendance was a season high in Bramlage Coliseum, and was the highest-attended women's basketball game in Bramlage Coliseum since March 31, 2006, when K-State hosted the WNIT Final in front of a sellout crowd of 13,340. The 2012 sellout was the ninth-largest crowd to view a women's basketball game since Bramlage Coliseum opened in 1988, and the 15th-largest crowd to witness a home game in the program's 44-year history. Here's the full release. |
3/17/12 K-State defeats Princeton... Connecticut's up next. Branshea Brown had a career-high 22 points, along with seven rebounds, to make the difference in the Cats' 67-64 win over Princeton (24-5). Jalana Childs had 15 points, and Mariah White had nine. The Cats (20-13) led by four points at halftime, so Princeton outscored them by one in the second half. K-State led in field goal percentage, 46% to 43%, but Princeton dominated in rebounds, 40 to 29. A case could be made that K-State won the game on free throws, as they hit 86%, including 10 of 12 in the second half. Monday's game will be seen on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com, beginning at 6 p.m. CDT. Brian Smoller will no doubt cover the game on KMAN. Let's get it done! This just in: Here's a UConn preview video from kstatefans on YouTube. Another this just in: Here's the Cat Band for our women's basketball game, on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, playing "Wabash Cannonball" while on a little side trip. |
3/12/12 NCAA Tournament Time! K-State's in the NCAA Tournament as a #8 seed. Here's a direct link to the bracket. Seven of 10 Big 12 schools were selected. This just in: It's video of the Cats watching the selection show on March 12. The Cats will meet #9 Princeton in Bridgeport, Connecticut sometime or other. The NCAA has done its usual crummy job of making simple details available. I'll post more here as it becomes available. |
3/08/12 Jalana leads the Cats to a Big 12 Tournament victory. Only eight days ago, K-State lost to Iowa State in Ames, 57-33, which makes today's 67-63 win over the Cyclones even sweeter. It wasn't exactly easy. There were seven tied scores, and nine lead changes. The Cats' starters played 169 of 200 minutes, scoring 63 of 67 points, and the Cyclones' starters played 173 minutes, scoring 60 of 63 points. For our Big 12 First Teamer, Jalana Childs, her 31 points marked a career high, and the most ever scored by a Cat in the Big 12 Tournament. She sealed the victory with a long jump shot with 00:22 to play. Baylor's up next, at noon tomorrow. |
2/18/12 Cats win big over Texas, 65-45 Tasha Dickey led the way with 18 points, shooting 50% from the field, as a strong second half performance finished off the Longhorns. K-State improved to 17-9, 8-6, with Texas at 15-11, 5-9. Brittany Chambers added 15 points and nine rebounds. Jalana Childs (shooting 50%) had 14 points. We have to mention that Jalana went 4-of-4 from the free throw line... each one perfect. Mariah White led with 10 rebounds. Coach Patterson cleared the bench this evening. The Cats defeated Texas 64-55 on February 1 in Austin, in that crazy second half when Texas went on a 16-1 run, and the Cats had enough and went on a 16-3 run. The 45 points by Texas today marked their lowest score of the season. |
2/12/12 Cats defeat the Squawks (and three officials) in Manhattan It was a hard-fought game with 11 lead changes and a happy ending, as we beat KU 47 - 43. Here are some fun notes from Sports Information: The Sunflower Series is now 62-42 Cats, and K-State has won an incredible 21 of the last 23 meetings, today delivering the 11th-straight loss in Manhattan. Coach P is now 24-11 vs. the birds. Bonnie Henrickson, conversely, is 2-13 vs. the Cats. Attendance was 4,893. More facts... mostly fun, but not all: Jalana Childs led with 18 points. The Cats' field goal percentage was 35.4%. A strong case could be made that excellent (80%) free throw shooting (for 12 points) gave us the victory. Jalana Childs hit 6 of 8, Mariah White hit 2 of 3, and Brittany Chambers hit 4 of 4. On the other hand, three-point field goal shooting was poor: 1 of 8 for 12.5%. We have to get Brittany Chambers free from defenders. KU did way too good a job stalking her this afternoon. I don't know what the answer is, since we don't have Taelor Karr to distract the defense. Future opponents are going to watch this game tape. I'll close with a special shout out to Jalana and Branshea for stepping up to lead the Cats to victory, and to Tasha Dickey for going 4 of 6 on field goals, 10 rebounds and three critical steals. |
2/01/12 Ownership: Kansas State defeats Texas in Austin, 64-55 "Never, never, never give up," Churchill supposedly said. The Cats (15-6, 6-3) had a seven-point lead at halftime, but came out cold after the break. Texas went on a 16-1 run, finding themselves leading by eight. The Cats eventually tired of this, and went on a 16-3 scoring run. Texas had huge turnover troubles, logging a total of 21 for the night, and the Cats cashed in, with 18 points off turnovers. Brittany Chambers led with 17 points, in spite of going 1-of-6 from three-point land. As usual, she played all 40 minutes. Jalana Childs added 16 points, and Tasha Dickey had 10. Branshea Brown had a huge impact, with six steals. Not surprisingly, Texas was award 18 free throws to the Cats' 10. K-State had 17 fouls, and Texas was called for 11. K-State, along with the Aggies and the Okies, is in a three-way tie for 2nd place in the Big 12. A win over Baylor on Saturday would be huge. Hey... how about the SEC's new recruits, Missouri? They're 0-9 in conference play. |
1/15/12 How about this! |
1/14/12 Cats defeat #10 Texas Tech in Lubbock! What a barnburner! It was a strong first half for K-State, with a 10-point lead at halftime, on 59% shooting. TTU hadn't lost at home this season after 10 games, and returned from the locker room ready to turn things around. A large, partisan crowd of 6,313 got fired up. The broadcast team had strong play from Jalana Childs as a key to victory, and she led all with 23 points, shooting 55%. Tasha Dickey had a big afternoon, adding 17 points. She unfortunately fouled out toward the end, but had done her damage. Brittany Chambers had 15 points. The game came down to the wire, with Tech holding the ball long enough at the end to win, but they missed multiple late shots, leaving the K-State (13-3, 4-0) with a 62-61 victory, as well as first place in the Big 12 standings. |
1/07/12 Cats beat the Squawks in Lawrence (again) Fresh from a victory over the national champions, Kansas State (11-3, 2-0 Big 12) bussed into Lawrence to tangle with an improved KU team, who are currently #1 in Division I in field goal percentage, #16 in scoring offense and #21 in scoring margin. Meanwhile, the Cats are #11 in scoring defense, and #12 in field goal percentage defense. The lead changed numerous times, and at no time did either team lead by more than eight points. KU won the first half with 32 points, and K-State had 35 second-half points. Field goal percentage was a difference in the game. K-State shot 45%, and KU shot 37%. Three-point shooting was a bigger difference, with K-State at 55% and KU at a modest 18%. Free throw shooting was even for both teams at 88.2%. The Cats won rebounding, at 34 to 27. In the second half, a noticeable difference was K-State's 60% shooting on threes, while KU shot an infinitesimal 0%. Brittany Chambers led scoring with 23 points, Jalana Childs had 15 and Branshea Brown had 12. Attendance was 5,657. Reportedly KU gave out free tickets to all the elementary students in Lawrence. Halftime entertainment was 60 Topeka and Lawrence women in sweatsuits, doing their exercises. Bonnie Henrickson, as usual, wore one of her pantsuits, and a white blouse with gigantic lapels. The KU pep band continues to demonstrate their fascination with circus music. This was the 20th victory out of the last 22 games with KU, who are visibly weary of this domination. 1/09/12 Brittany Chambers: Big 12 Player of the Week The Big 12 Conference has announced Brittany's selection as Player of the Week, for her part in two recent victories. She contributed 21 points vs. #9 Texas A&M (playing all 45 minutes), and 23 points vs. KU. |
1/04/12 Cats beat the national champions It wasn't a domination, but our Cats kept sawing wood, and defeated defending national champions, #9 Texas A&M, 71-69 in overtime. Naturally this brought pleasant memories of beating #5 Texas A&M on Senior Night, March 2, 71-67. The Cats shot a modest 42% in the first half, but held A&M to 39%. The greater problem was shooting 17% from beyond the arc in the first half, leading to a halftime score of 34-25 Aggies. In the second period, the deficit reached 11 points at one time, but Brittany Chambers (who played all 45 minutes) found her range, ending with 21 points. Tasha Dickey was second in scoring, with 17 points, and Jalana Childs had 16. Next in scoring was Mariah White, and many are crediting Mariah with winning the game, as she made the go-ahead layup with :04 left in overtime. The Cats are now 10-3, 1-0, and off to a very fine start! |
